Where character limits bite

  • Page titles are truncated in search results at roughly 60 characters.
  • Meta descriptions are cut at around 155 characters.
  • A social post limit is typically counted in characters including spaces.
  • SMS messages split into 160-character segments, which can reorder on delivery.

Why count in the browser

Word counters are often used on drafts that are not ready to be seen — contracts, announcements, personal writing.

Doing the counting locally means the text never travels anywhere, which is the whole reason this tool exists rather than a server-side one.

Frequently asked questions

Do spaces count as characters?

Both figures are shown — one includes spaces, the other excludes them. Which one a platform wants varies, so check before you trim.

How is reading time estimated?

At 200 words per minute, a common average for reading on screen. Speaking is slower, closer to 130 words per minute.

What counts as a word?

Anything between whitespace. Hyphenated terms and numbers each count as one, which matches how most publishing platforms count.

How are paragraphs detected?

By blank lines. A single line break counts as a new line rather than a new paragraph.

Is this useful for social post limits?

Yes. The character count is the figure those platforms enforce, and it includes spaces and punctuation.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Counting happens locally in your browser, so nothing you paste leaves your device.
